DIORAMAS! THE KEY TO LEARNING ... & THE KEY TO TEACHING OTHERS
Honestly... I think you can see Engineering in everything!
|
Probably, more than anything else that we did... the making of the dioramas was the favorite part of our Challenge. Children had made small dioramas for Social Studies Reports, so all were ready to tackle the 6' X 4' piece of cardboard that I presented them with, one morning. I drew out the mountains and the hydrozones... and from there and onward... children figured out (engineered) their way to the finish.
We worked with cardboard, cups, styrofoam sheets, tee shirts dipped in plaster, elmer's glue, hot glue guns, pipe cleaners, paper clips, and on and on! |
Here are two short videos showing off the finished product.
Below that, I've loaded the page up with pictures, showing our work as we pressed ourselves to the finish line..
NOTE: Pictures on Dioramas have a RED Backing if it's BAD! GREEN Backing is GOOD!

Here are lots of pictures showing how detailed the children got when building their dioramas.
DIORAMA #1 - MAJOR CLIMATE ZONES & WATER CYCLE. AS BIG AS IT WAS, WE COULDN'T ADEQUATELY SHOW A DETAILED XERISCAPED GARDENS AROUND THE HOUSES. THAT WAS WHY WE BUILT A SECOND DIORAMA OF A TYPICAL MENLO PARK LOCATION (WELL... MAYBE NOT "TYPICAL"... :-)
DIORAMA #2 - CLEARLY SHOWING HYDROZONES, RAIN HARVESTER, DRIP IRRIGATION, SWALE & BERMS,
AND ON AND ON.
AND ON AND ON.
TWENTY CLASSMATES PAINTING AND BUILDING AT THE SAME TIME! WHAT AN AMAZING TEAM!
